Last year, Missy, a mother of two, found herself facing the daunting reality of homelessness. After her apartment was ultimately condemned, Missy found herself living with some friends for a few months, next in her car. Fortunately, Missy heard about Barrett’s Motel Assistance Program. The three-month program provided Missy and her children with shelter, allowing her to find an apartment. Unfortunately, she kept getting denied by potential places. As her stay in the program was about to end and with the fear of couch surfing or staying in her car weighed heavy on her mind, a family room opened at Barrett House Shelter.
“We were there for Christmas,” Missy’s voice trails off, “it was hard, but they made the holidays a lot easier especially as a single mom.” Missy reflects on her stay at Barrett during the holiday season, recalling the Christmas tree in the Community Room and saying that Barrett getting her kids a gift, “brought tears to my eyes, it was not something that needed to be done, it was above and beyond anything.” When Missy and her children found a home, Barrett provided a food box and some furniture for their new home. “Barrett just going above and beyond for us has made our lives easier.”
